Home Letters Congratulations, Monica Geingos!

The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation (MIRCO) congratulates Madame Monica Geingos on her appointment as UNAIDS Special Advocate for Young Women and Adolescent Girls.

The First Lady of the Republic of Namibia, Madame Monica Geingos, was appointed as UNAIDS Special Advocate for Young Women and Adolescent Girls. She is expected to champion the newly launched Start Free, Stay Free, AIDS Free agenda, an agenda to put the world on a super-fast track to end HIV/AIDS among children, adolescents and young women by 2020.

Through this agenda, the First Lady will advocate for the improvement of the health of adolescent girls and young women, and will be tasked, specifically, with the responsibility of using her platform to find partners and solutions to some of the difficult health issues facing young women and adolescent girls, including HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health, as well as access to education.

The Executive Director of UNAIDS, Mr Michel Sidibé, conferred the honour on the First Lady on 22 September 2016, during a meeting that took place on the margins of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Through this appointment, the UNAIDS has shown trust and confidence in the efforts of the leadership of Namibia, in making a contribution in the lives of young women and adolescent girls on the world stage.
