LÜDERITZ – A case of negligent driving is being investigated at Lüderitz after an incident in which a police traffic officer reportedly rammed into a GWM single-cab in the industrial road.

The traffic officer faces a charge of negligent or alternatively reckless driving after he rammed his vehicle into the single-cab bakkie.

At the time of the incident the single-cab stopped at a stop sign to make way for other traffic.

Deputy Commissioner and Head of Regional Crime Investigations in //Karas Region, Rudolf Julius Isaak, confirmed the incident and said the traffic police vehicle was transporting five people.

All the five passengers in the traffic police vehicle were taken to hospital where they were treated for superficial injuries, said Isaak.

He also indicated the cause of the accident was still unknown as the incident was still under investigation, and he indicated that at the time of the accident the traffic officer and his five colleagues were on their way to report for duty.

“A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened against the traffic officer who will appear in court once investigations are finalized,” stated Deputy Commissioner Isaak.

The incident took place at the main four-way stop in Lüderitz and six people sustained minor injuries.

The sole occupant of the vehicle that was rammed is also believed to have suffered minor injuries.

Lüderitz has been without a traffic officer for nearly eight months and the traffic officer was sent to the town mid last month.
