Thieves stole copper wires from the Telecom network in the capital leaving close to a thousand customers without services.

Telecom Namibia spokesperson, Oiva Angula, said the thieves stole about 100 metres of essential underground wiring of cable of different sizes on Saturday.

The disconnection resulting from the stolen cables has affected 953 customers mainly in Lafrenz Township in the Northern Industrial area.

Angula said the damage has affected customers in the northwestern part of Katutura and the southern part of Okuryangava.

Restoration will only be completed tomorrow.

It could not be established how much loss the company will this time incur in terms of lost business.

Angula explained that the thieves gained access through a manhole in the area and pulled out wires. Telephone and data services were affected.
“Telecom technicians are working round the clock to restore service as quickly as possible, but this work will only be finished by Friday, October 19, 2007,” he said.
