Correctional officer ‘steals’ pig

OLUNO – A male correctional officer at Oluno Correctional Facility is under investigation for allegedly stealing a pig from the facility on Monday.

The Commissioner General of the Namibian Correctional Service, Raphael Hamunyela confirmed the incident.

The stolen pig was allegedly intended to be slaughtered for the inmates, or sold to the public to
generate income for the facility.

Hamunyela said a case of theft has been opened against the officer.

The suspect was allegedly given N$500 by a friend to purchase a pig for him.

Instead of buying one, the suspect allegedly opted to steal the pig from the facility, and concealed it in a bag of maize meal.

“He then called a taxi driver to the correctional facility, and loaded the pig into the vehicle,” he said.

The pig was discovered at the gate by fellow officers who were on duty.

“The suspect failed to provide proper documentation for the pig, leading to its return to the kraal,” said the commissioner.   Hamunyela revealed  the suspect has not yet been arrested by the police, but will face disciplinary action.

“It is shameful when officers are committing crimes.

This should be stopped immediately,” he said.

Hamunyela emphasised that officers interact with inmates on a daily basis. Therefore, they are expected to set a good example at all times.
