KEETMANSHOOP – The Chairperson of the Bethanie Village Council Edward Wells was arrested on Friday after he was found in possession of mandrax tablets. 

Mandrax worth N$40 was found on the person of the ‘honourable councillor’.

According to the Regional Commander of the //Karas Region Armas Shivute the police cornered Wells just after 17h00 on Friday afternoon, about 20 kilometres outside Keetmanshoop enroute to Lüderitz after police received a call from an informant.

“We are very grateful for the cooperation of community members. Without them we would not have had the information.

“The community must understand we (the police) are part of their community and need to be supported,” he said.

Police further stated the accused travelled in a vehicle belonging to the Bethanie Village Council, with the registration number N 98 B.

According to police sources the 42- year-old accused asked to plead guilty, but the matter was postponed to March 17 2014 for further investigation and bail of N$500 was granted when he appeared in court yesterday .
