The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) recently launched a series of capacity-building training sessions with customs officials from the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA).
This initiative, conducted under the agreement between CRAN and NamRA, seeks to deepen understanding and strengthen compliance with type approval regulations for telecommunications equipment.
Type approval is a regulatory process that ensures telecommunications equipment meets Namibia’s technical and safety standards before entering the market.
This process protects consumers by ensuring devices operate efficiently within the national telecommunications network without causing interference or compromising security.
The training series commenced with NamRA customs officials in Windhoek in September, followed by sessions in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, with plans to continue in other key locations.
The primary goal of the training programme is to equip customs officials and clearing agents with a comprehensive understanding of the type approval process, relevant regulations and the list of exempted equipment.
Activities include interactive sessions to clarify type approval procedures, exemptions for regulated equipment as well as a regional awareness campaign to foster a consistent understanding of regulations and promote compliance nationwide.
The programme involves ongoing stakeholder engagement to address queries related to type approval and scheduled visits to various border posts to provide continued support and guidance.
The latest training session took place at the Trans Kalahari border post on 29 November 2024.
In the 2025/2026 financial year, training will expand to additional locations, including the Katima Mulilo Border Post (formerly known as Wenela Border Post), Oshikango Border Post, Katima Mulilo regional office, Ngoma Border Post, Impalila Island Border Post, Rundu regional office, Mohembo Border Post, Katwitwi Border Post, Sarusungu Border Post and the Oshakati regional office.
Through this initiative, CRAN aims to increase awareness and understanding of type approval processes among stakeholders, improve compliance with regulations, and reduce issues related to detained goods and exemption letters for non-regulated equipment.
CRAN remains committed to supporting NamRA in ensuring that all imported telecommunications equipment aligns with Namibian standards, thereby safeguarding both consumers and the national telecommunications infrastructure.
