Relegation-threatened Cuca Tops and Unam Jaguars are heading into a defining weekend in the MTC Netball Namibia Premier League as they prepare for a series of must-win fixtures at the Paresis netball courts in Otjiwarongo.
Cuca Tops will face a tough triple-header starting tomorrow when they clash the in-form Mighty Gunners. Later that day, they return to the court for their second match against Unam Ogongo. With barely any recovery time, the pressure will intensify on Sunday morning when they take on the Namibian Navy.
These back-to-back matches could either provide a lifeline or push them further into the relegation zone, making consistency and endurance critical to their survival hopes.
Unam Jaguars also face a challenging schedule this weekend. Tomorrow, they compete against Otjozondjupa Nampol, a team known for their disciplined defence and physical style of play.
Jaguars will return to the court on Sunday for a derby match against Unam Ogongo — a game driven by campus rivalry and league survival stakes.
Assistant Unam Jaguars coach, Vendjii Katjaimo, acknowledged the team’s difficult predicament as they sit second-last on the log heading into the second round of the second leg. However, she remained optimistic, saying their story is far from over.
“Our current position may look bleak, but there’s plenty of season left. We will refine our tactics, sharpen mental toughness, and rally as a unit. We have succeeded through promotion before, and I believe in this squad’s ability to fight its way out of the danger zone. The goal is clear — stay competitive and finish the season strong,” Katjaimo said.
Meanwhile, as the league continues, individual brilliance continues to shine through with several players distinguishing themselves in the Player of the Match rankings. Melita Hunga of Eastern Chiefs, Usuta Muvangua of Extreme Eagles, and Miryam Johannes of Mighty Gunners have each scooped the accolade four times, showcasing their consistency and impact.
Rosalia Nanghonda of Unam Ogongo, Hope Kazondovi of Wanderers, Uapandera Muundjua of Unam Ogongo, and Grace Matyayi of Unam Jaguars have each claimed the award three times, proving to be key figures for their respective sides.
