Home Crime and Courts Daycare owner in court for child’s death

WINDHOEK – A 25-year old woman who allegedly operated an illegal daycare centre in Windhoek where an 11-month-old boy died made a first appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court last week. This came after the office of the Attorney-General decided to institute criminal charges against her.

The incident in which the toddler Ferreira Scholtz died allegedly happened on November 20, 2012 at Pluto Street in Academia, Windhoek.

Cathrina van der Berg was summoned to appear before Magistrate Ingrid Unengu on one count of culpable homicide and one count of operating an unregistered daycare facility between June 2012 and November 2012.

It is alleged that Van den Berg wrongfully and negligently cause the death of the toddler while he was in her care at the unregistered daycare facility.

After her rights to legal representation were explained to Van den Berg, she told Unengu she would engage a private lawyer.

The case was postponed to May 28 for legal representation and her warning was extended to that date.
