Namibian fashion designers Armando van Wyk and Jody Claasen are representing the country at the prestigious Batho Fashion Week in Gaborone, Botswana.
This significant opportunity was a result of the strategic partnership signed last year between MTC Windhoek Fashion Week and Batho Fashion Week, with the goal of fostering collaboration and strengthening ties in the arts and cultural space between the two nations.
Van Wyk, founder of King_A_Apparel, is known for his bold and edgy designs that challenge conventional fashion norms. His work has become synonymous with creativity and expression, making him a prominent figure on Namibia’s fashion scene.
“One word, blessed. I am here for a reason, and I’m purposely living it out. I’m extremely grateful for the experience, and ready to bring Namibian greatness to the world,” he said.
The designer told VIBEZ! his collection ‘Tashley’, which he is showcasing, is a mixture of 11 pieces: six males and five females. The artwork screams aggressive corporate, street style merged with corporate wear, which is a representation of his life as a banker by day and a designer by night.
He said it is dedicated to his deceased 11-day-old niece. Hence, the 11 design pieces.
“Losing her little soul brought the family together, and brought us closer to God . That’s why I incorporated a fabric that has roots or trees printed on it to represent that no matter what is thrown at us, you should be deeply- rooted in what you believe in, and stand steadfast in Christ.”
Jody Claasen, founder of J. Class, brings a different flair to the runway with her ethereal and sophisticated designs that embody grace and elegance.
Her brand, J. Class, has captivated audiences with its timeless appeal and intricate craftsmanship.
Speaking about this exciting development, Luis Munana, Director at MTC Windhoek Fashion Week, said they are thrilled to see Namibian designers taking their talents to new heights. “Batho Fashion Week provides an excellent opportunity for them to engage with a wider audience, expand their market reach, and solidify Namibia’s position as a key player in the global fashion industry. This collaboration is a testament to the strength of our partnership with Batho Fashion Week, and our shared commitment to promoting arts and culture across borders,” he said.
He further said the participation of the designers at fashion week is not only a platform to showcase their brand and talent, but also an invaluable opportunity to market and sell their products beyond Namibia’s borders.
“This cross-border collaboration underscores the importance of cultural exchange, and the growing influence of Namibian fashion on the international stage,” he said. Batho Fashion Week is a leading fashion event in Botswana, known for its commitment to promoting African fashion, and creating a platform for designers to showcase their work on an international stage.
