Home Crime and Courts Detained detective granted bail

WINDHOEK – The former unit commander of the Namibian Police Drug Law Enforcement Unit, Chief Inspector Freddy Basson, was on Friday granted bail of N$40 000 in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court.

Basson is charged with theft  of exhibits from the drug unit’s safe. The items he allegedly stole are cocaine valued at N$1 million, two video cameras valued at N$9 000 and cash of N$21 650.

He was arrested on 23 January and made a first court appearance on 24 January when he was refused bail for fear that that he might interfere with the investigation.

The State no longer objects to bail and Basson who was represented by Milton Engelbrecht from the Boris Isaacks stable could taste freedom again.

The only condition that was attached to Basson’s bail is that he must report every Monday to Friday at the Drug Law Enforcement Unit’s offices between 08h00 and 17h00.

Basson’s trial was postponed to 16 April for further police investigations.

Magistrate Justine Asino was on the bench and state prosecutor Henry Muhongo appeared for the State.
