Diamond ‘robbers’ plead not guilty

A former employee of Namdia has denied the allegations contained in a charge of robbery of diamonds worth over N$300 million levelled against him.

The diamonds are alleged to have been stolen by the employee in an armed heist that took place in January this year at the parastatal’s headquarters in Windhoek.

Joe Angula (46) tendered a plea of not guilty to the five charges last Friday, 24 October 2025, before Magistrate Olga Muharukua.

Angula, who appeared for the plea proceeding alongside his co-accused, Sam Shololo (50), faces charges including murder, robbery, two counts of attempted murder and possession of rough and uncut diamonds.

Angula pleaded not guilty and gave a plea explanation, stating that he denies the allegations contained in the charges.

Shololo also tendered a not guilty plea to all the charges, but did not give a plea explanation and put the onus on the State to prove its case.

The State alleges that on 18 January 2025, the two accused unlawfully killed a Namdia security guard, Francis Eiseb, who was shot when the duo stormed into the headquarters with firearms.

In the charge sheet, it reads that the two allegedly forced Monica Shapwa into submission by threatening and assaulting her by pointing a gun and a knife at her, covering her head with a bag, and tying her hands and feet with cable ties, and stole from her or Namdia, diamonds worth N$349.4 million.

They further allegedly assaulted Selma Iyambo Amutenya by cutting her face with a knife, with the intention of murdering her.

The duo also assaulted Ndafyaalako Saara Hepeni by stabbing her on the leg with a knife, allegedly with the intent to murder her.

Angula and Shololo allegedly also illegally possessed rough and uncut diamonds with a mass of unknown carats and an unknown value.

It is these allegations contained in the charges that Angula explicitly denied.

The matter was postponed to 19 March 2026 for the prosecutor general’s decision (PGD).

Angula was also handed an earlier date of 18 November 2025 for his formal bail hearing.
