Home International DNA to determine baby-dumping case

The court has released the 26-year-old woman who was arrested for dumping an infant at Etango Complex in Oshakati early this month.

According to sources, the suspect who was due to appear in the Oshakati Magistrate’s court on Tuesday, was released pending DNA results obtained for the suspect and the infant.

The suspect was charged with abortion but the court released her pending the outcome of the DNA tests.

Sources claimed that until such results are brought before court, there is no substantive information to prosecute the suspect.

According to the police spokesperson Inspector Slogan Matheus, the suspect was arrested last week Friday at Ombili location at Otjiwarongo.

New Era was reliably informed that the informant that led to the woman’s arrest is allegedly a boyfriend who has issues with the suspect.

New Era was informed that the boyfriend identified the woman in the pictures circulating on social media.

New Era was further informed that the informant tipped off the police after his pregnant girlfriend arrived back from the north without a baby.

“According to the informant his heavily pregnant lady left for the north to deliver, however around the time of the alleged act she messaged the boyfriend that ‘there is nothing here’ and the next thing she appears without a baby,” said the source.

Sources however alleged that the suspect was never pregnant, but just had a bloated tummy.

“She also thought she was pregnant, however the person was taking some substance (known to New Era) that made her tummy bloated,” related the source.

The suspect is also said to have been home at the time the alleged act was committed and a traditional healer, an expert in tummy massage, has said that the suspect was not pregnant.

A statement issued by Inspector Matheus said there were striking similarities between the evidence of the police and the current circumstances of the suspect.

“Investigations into the matter are still incomplete, as we are still waiting DNA results, thus at this stage we cannot confirm to have arrested the suspect who appears in the CCTV footage,” said Matheus.
