From days of youth, this young man never wavered;
At times caught by police and badly battered;
Yet still, he would continue in his pursuit;
Dealing with enemies of progress through cutting down their root;
Knowing that he had to engage in a war of diplomacy;
He took up the struggle for independence and showed no mercy;
From very early days he became exiled from his own birth place;
As he walked through the valley of death with only God’s grace;
Many thought and said he won’t make it back alive;
Yet today, under his shadows we all thrive;
He had a dream……
Tireless nights spend; planning and strategising on lifting his people out of bondage;
Culminated in the downfall of the Apartheid era on the global stage;
Having witnessed the Cassinga massacre that; to this day remains monumental;
He took the fight to the forefront as Major General;
This man’s dream inspired his people to take up arms;
A decisive battle was waged that ensured our coat of arms;
With very little military technical ability and prowess;
He took on the mighty in-discriminatory powers;
Though the battle was very long and hard;
He stood firm and never sold his people for a meal card;
He had a dream……
Of a free, democratic and independent country;
Of a people free to express their dreams without being bounty;
Of a nation standing together, never to be defeated;
Of a people that will move freely without being berated;
On his shoulders we could stand and be heard;
As he dealt with those forces that were feared;
Upon his dream, we could now build harmony amongst a people segregated;
Never to allow a united people to again become separated;
A salutation to the Founding Father of the Republic;
Without your dream, the enemy would have had his way with their evil tactic;
Upon your dream we can now build ours;
Knowing we stand today, because you stood for hours
He had a dream…..
