An eight-year-old-boy drowned in the Kavango River at Kashira village in Ndiyona Constituency of Kavango East on Friday afternoon.
It was reported that the child went swimming with his two elder sisters who are also minors; one is reported to be 15 and the other 13-years-old. While swimming in the Kavango river the boy was apparently overpowered by the strong flow of water and drowned.
According to the police, the deceased was identified as Mukoya George from Livayi village, which is also in the Ndiyona Constituency, but further inland. He had only come with their mother Kanyengo Sophia for the school holiday.
“The body of Mukoya George, who drowned in the river on Friday, is not yet recovered but our members are still on search and we have informed the family members,” Detective Chief Inspector Chrispin Mubebo of the Namibian Police in Kavango East Region said yesterday.
Mubebo urged parents to look after children – especially now that it’s a school holiday and they have the children have a lot of free time – and not to allow them to play at the river alone as the river is always dangerous.
