Finally, the elderly will receive an increase in their monthly pension, albeit a meagre N$80.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, Ulitala Hiveluah, said the pensioners and people living with disabilities would receive their increase this month, backdated to April 1.

The Ministry of Finance provided for the increase to the Basic State Grants for the elderly and people living with disabilities, who received a disability grant for the disabled people in the National Budget 2008/9.

The grant increased from N$370 to N$450 per month.

“The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare herewith informs all persons who are beneficiaries to the Basic State Grants, Old Age Pensioner and Disability Grants, that they would receive an increase backdated from April 1.

All are therefore urged to visit their designated pay points in order to collect their grants and allowances,” Hiveluah said in a statement.
