Pretorius Naudi, 24, from Popa Village and Tsapau Dakomba, 39, from Omega One Village, both Namibians, were granted N$2 000 bail each when they appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on charges of illegal possession of elephant tusks and a firearm.
Alternatively, the suspects face a charge of illegal possession of controlled wildlife products.
The duo appeared in court on Tuesday before Magistrate Barry Mufana, where Emma Mayavero prosecuted and Justinus Kandjimi was the interpreter.
Police in Mukwe Constituency in Kavango East Region arrested the two men on Friday when they reportedly found them in possession of two elephant tusks. The suspects were driving a dark green Toyota Corolla at Buffalo, situated in the Bwabwata (West) National Park.
The case was remanded to June 9 for further police investigations. The two accused, after the court explained to them their rights to legal representation, opted to conduct their own defence at their next appearance, which will take place in the Mukwe Magistrate’s Court.
