LüDERITZ – The annual Elizabeth Bay Mine Cup competition, recently held at the southern town of Lüderitz, once again proved a huge success with many enthusiastic sports lovers in attendance.

Since its inception in 1993, the tournament has for the past 21 years enjoyed adequate financial backing from Namdeb and this year the mining company once again came on board, with a handsome sponsorship of N$70 000.

A total of 10 football teams, nine volleyball teams and five netball teams all took to the field to compete for top honours in the various categories.

In the football division the Lüderitz Town Council walked away as victors with a cheque of N$5 000.

In 2nd place was Lüderitz Secondary School which took home N$3 000, while Antlantic Star received a consolation prize of N$2 000 for finishing 3rd overall.

In netball results, Buchters Netball Club were the deserving winners and received N$4 000 as prize money, while United-12 Keetmanshoop finished      2nd to take home N$2 500.

Nampol Lüderitz Volleyball Club finished top in the volleyball Mix category, taking home N$ 3 000, followed by the Lüderitz Town Council in 2nd place with N$2 000.

In the men’s category, Oranjemund Volleyball Club pocketed N$3 000 for first place and the Keetmanshoop Prison managed to finish 2nd and were awarded N$2 000.

“Rugby was initially included in the tournament but due to a few technicalities the invited teams could not pitch up. We as management of Namdeb have resolved to reschedule the rugby games to this coming weekend, depending on whether all the invited teams will make it to the games,” said Quinton Andrews, Namdeb representative.
