WE LEAD NAMIBIA, a youth initiative in the Kunene region, is making strides in empowering young minds for a brighter future. Founded by Stella da Costa, Miss Ondangwa Trade Fair 2023, this project is driven by the belief that the youth have the power to lead and bring positive change to their communities.

WE LEAD’s journey began with the ‘Bring a Buddy to Parliament’ workshop initiated by the Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus. Inspired by the lessons on leadership, Da Costa took the initiative to channel her knowledge for the benefit of her community, leading to the inception of WE LEAD NAMIBIA.

Focusing on innovative ideas and embracing cultural backgrounds, WE LEAD aims to bridge gaps in the Kunene region. Challenges such as limited guidance, motivation and skills development opportunities are addressed through initiatives covering leadership, hygiene, menstrual education, teenage pregnancy and career guidance.

“WE LEAD NAMIBIA, however, doesn’t only want to focus on motivating and handing out things. The future we want to build is to help with better school facilities such as safe hostels for the learners and safe toilets. Most schools do not even have toilets or safe hostels for the learners, which is a very big risk. Our organisation would love to also provide safe studying environments for the learners,” she added.

Da Costa told Youth Corner that they had their first project in 2022. They had engagements at up to nine schools around the Kunene region, and the topics they touched on were leadership skills, emotional intelligence, career guidance and environmental skills. This initiative was sponsored by the Namibia Nature Foundation and Bring a Buddy to Parly.

In 2023, WE LEAD extended its efforts by donating pads and school supplies to the Okapembambu and Omwangete Primary Schools. Motivational sessions addressed critical issues such as childhood marriage and teenage pregnancy, encouraging learners to have a voice and the right to choose their path.

With AfriSource Innovation and Friends of Namibia on board, WE LEAD expressed gratitude for their support, but emphasised the need for more partnerships. The project’s vision extends beyond the Kunene region, aspiring to impact youth across Namibia, fostering a mindset that motivates learners to become leaders of their own lives.

“Namibia has bright-minded people. I believe in us, and I believe that all we need is that one little push and unity to make this the greatest country we could ever ask for. What makes Namibia beautiful are the Namibian people, so we should take care of the Namibian people for Namibia. Now, WE LEAD is still a baby, but I want it to grow into different regions, and impact learners and youth all around Namibia. We are trying to be as inclusive as we can be so that nobody can be left behind,” she enthused.
