A 26-year-old woman died in car accident on Saturday between Swakopmund and Henties Bay, while returning from a year-end function.
The police opened a case of culpable homicide and drunk driving against the driver of the Mercedes Benz in which the deceased, identified as Kaino Antonius, was a passenger.
There were five occupants in the car – all colleagues and employees of Husab uranium mine.
The Namibian police spokesperson Inspector Slogan Mathews said the driver was attempting to overtake a truck but when he saw that there was an oncoming vehicle he went back into his lane but bumped into the rear of the truck he wanted to overtake.
He lost control of the vehicle and overturned. Antonius died on the spot. Two other passengers both aged 23 years sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Swakopmund State Hospital.
Another passenger sustained serious injuries and was transferred to Katutura Intermediate Hospital. The driver was treated for minor injuries and discharged from hospital but was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
An accident on the B1 between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo claimed the lives of both drivers on Friday afternoon.
Mathews said the driver of a Hyundai, believed to be travelling from Otjiwarongo to Okahandja, is suspected to have fallen asleep on the road and as a result encroached into the lane of oncoming vehicles and collided head-on with an oncoming Passat sedan.
There were five occupants in the Hyundai including the driver, all family members – the husband, wife and children. The driver Andrew Steyn, 45, died on the scene while the four passengers, the wife, 41, a boy of 11 years, a 4-year-old girl and a 17-year-old teenager were treated for minor injuries at Otjiwarongo State Hospital and were discharged.
In the Passat, there were four occupants including the driver, also family. The driver Natanael Haraseb, 56, died at the scene, while the three passengers – the wife, age unknown, a young woman aged 24 and a 14-year-old teenager – all sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Okahandja State Hospital. Their condition is reported to be stable.
In another accident on Friday, a driver of a Toyota Raider single cab ran over two male pedestrians who both died at the scene.
Mathews said the rear right tyre of the vehicle burst and the driver lost control resulting in the accident.
The pedestrians were identified as Johannes Wilhelm, 26, and 28-year-old Nghulili Silas Ndakondjele.
It is further reported that the driver, Nekayi Rouseau, 37, who was alone in the vehicle was admitted to Omuthiya State Hospital where he later died at about 19:00.
