SWAKOPMUND – Newly elected Erongo Regional Council chairperson Florian Donatus has pledged to fast-track development and prioritise service delivery, transparency and accountability across the region.
Donatus held his first media engagement on Wednesday afternoon where he said he was determined to restore efficiency to the regional administration.
“It is with a profound sense of duty and deep appreciation that I have accepted this role. I am committed to working alongside each of you to ensure we continue to thrive as a people,” Donatus said.
He commended outgoing chairperson Benitha Imbamba for her contribution and acknowledged the legacy of previous council leaders. However, he said the focus now must be on execution and improved oversight, particularly in critical sectors such as education and infrastructure.
“We must assist the directorate of education in improving learner performance in the region. We cannot continue sending children onto the streets when we should be enrolling them in universities, vocational training centres and colleges,” he said.
Donatus expressed concerns about waste management in Walvis Bay, saying this would be among his top priorities.
“We will start with the Walvis Bay municipality next week. The town is becoming a health hazard due to waste issues. We need immediate solutions,” he said.
Highlighting the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) as a vital tool to stimulate small and medium enterprises (SMEs), he urged speedy approval of applications and delivery of equipment donated through the fund.
“The more we delay, the more people suffer. The materials and support must be handed over on time so that recipients can start their businesses and earn income instantly,” Donatus said.
He emphasised a collaborative approach to regional development, calling on all stakeholders, including governor Neville Andre as well as the private sector, to join hands in rebuilding the region’s socio-economic status.
“I will work hard to strengthen relationships between the council, governor and all relevant ministries to achieve our developmental ambitions,” he said.
The chairperson further said the region’s natural resources, particularly minerals, must benefit locals directly.
“We need to reduce our reliance on raw exports. The dividends of resource beneficiation should start with us. This is the conversation I will advance with deputy prime minister Natangwe Ithete,” he said.
