Eswatini drums up AU support

Eswatini drums up AU support

Eswatini has stepped up its campaign to secure the position of African Union (AU) Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, the Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment.

Leading the effort is Phila Buthelezi, Minister of Labour and Social Security and Special Envoy, who met Namibia’s President Nangolo Mbumba yesterday.

The President warmly received Buthelezi and the delegation, affirming Namibia’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with Eswatini.

“I am deeply honoured that His Majesty’s government sent a special envoy. Please convey that the message is well-received, and will be considered with the seriousness it deserves,” said Mbumba.

He also commended Eswatini’s efforts in Mozambique during its post-election challenges, emphasising the significance of solidarity in African leadership.

“Your country showed exceptional leadership by providing refuge and assistance to Mozambican citizens in need, even in difficult circumstances. This kind of solidarity is commendable,” he noted.

The President furthermore underscored the importance of enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in business and trade, calling for greater collaboration between entrepreneurs in Namibia and Eswatini.

“It is time for entrepreneurs from both nations to collaborate. Business leaders from Eswatini should explore opportunities in Namibia, and vice versa, as there is immense growth potential,” he said.

Regarding the candidacy, Mbumba expressed confidence in Eswatini’s nominee.

“Your candidate’s achievements speak for themselves. Their background and accomplishments make them a strong contender for this crucial role,” he added.

Buthelezi highlighted Eswatini’s historical bid for the AU position, underlining the Kingdom’s drive to make its mark.

“Eswatini is contesting for this position for the very first time, competing against five other nations that have previously held AU roles. We are here to garner Namibia’s support,” he said.

He said the visit to Namibia is a significant step in Eswatini’s campaign, as both nations reiterated their shared vision of progress and collaboration within the AU framework.
