Art exhibitions are great platforms for exhibitors to share concepts, knowledge and showcase artistic talent but most importantly, interact with enthusiasts.
This is exactly what Michelle Isaak had in mind when she recently opened her first solo exhibition at the Franco Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) under the theme ‘The Women Within’ in light of International Women’s Day celebrated on 8 March.
“Women within (inner voice) is the importance of understanding that no one is going to value you more than you value yourself. Peace, justice, compassion and inclusion; these values women share no matter what their profession or background may be,” she told VIBEZ!
This is Isaak’s 10th exhibition but her first solo one. Having held group exhibitions in Serbia, Namibia and South Africa, she has developed an indescribable passion for art, and plans on hosting more in the future.
“I have exhibited in one major exhibition, The Bank Windhoek Triennial Art Competition in 2021 held by the National Art Gallery of Namibia. I have also exhibited outside Namibia, in Serbia with The Museum of African Art in 2020, where my work titled ‘If walls could talk’ is now part of their permanent collection. I also participated in the Cape Town Arts Fair in 2022,” shared the College of the Arts graduate.
Isaak stated that women should be recognised for their achievements despite divisions and persisting boundaries, adding that female empowerment is just as vital as ever before, including fighting for equality.
She has also taken part in Futur Foundation Switzerland for the Corona 2020 Art Competition, where she won third place.
Isaak said her work reflects a world where innocence is quickly claimed.
“It’s so hard to stand your ground when you are afraid and no one reaches out a hand for you to hold. When you look outside and look inside your soul, there is no one else, look inside yourself like your oldest friend. Trust the voice within and you’ll find your strength that will guide your way.”
Part of the collection and going for N$4 000 is ‘The In-between’, which is made from cardboard box. This art piece resembles imperfection, said Isaak.
“Of course, we are not perfect, we have our flaws and mistakes, and that is the exact reason why we strive to be a better version of ourselves each day,” she explained.
Inaugurated on 30 January 1991 in Windhoek, the FNCC aims to stimulate and support Namibian artists and cultural projects by offering know-how, resources and equipment.
