Five private hostels gathered at the Ovihitua Primary School in the  Daures Constituency in the Omatjete Settlement to receive donations worth N$ 50 000 and play sport in honour of a retiring extra-murals teacher.

The two-fold event saw Hilde Tjitua retire from a life spent in the calling of teaching and Ovihitua native, Onesmus Ndungaua sponsored  five private hostels with N$ 10 000 each to help them alleviate food and shelter challenges they face.  Tjitua has  been in the service of education for 40 years and was amongst the founders of Ovihitua Primary School. She excelled in extra-murals, especially sport and cultural activities where she mentored primary school children who had gone on to become national athletes and actors in their own right.

Ndungaua learned about the plight of Ovihitua, Ozondati, Okongwe, Otjohorongo and Omatjete primary schools’ hostels last year and promised to find within his own means some money to donate to these hostels and help them improve their support to feeding and housing their primary school students.

On Friday, parents, teachers and students from Ovihitua and the  other four primary schools gathered at that village to play football and netball and receive the financial donations on behalf of their hostels. “Whatever you have can be multiplied if you share with others,” the councilor of Daures Constituency, Erenst Katjiku,  said as he acknowledged Ndungaua’s donation.  Katjiku called on the business community in the area to join the Ndungaua’s family in donating to the hostels and help the schools educate the Namibian child. “Your contribution shall remain engraved in the hearts and minds of these young Namibian children,” Katjiku remarked to Tjitua, who in her career, has  taught at many schools in the Erongo region until her retirement at Ovihitua, where she was a founding teacher.

Katjiku  emphasised that in rural communities like Omatjete, where lifestyle and resources are constrained, providing quality and effective education required a concerted effort from all stakeholders.

Ndungaua promised to continue his support to the primary school hostels and the sport events started in honour of Tjitua every year.
