WALVIS BAY – An-eight-year-old boy was reportedly shot and killed by his father on Saturday in Walvis Bay, while he lay sleeping.
The incident occurred early on Saturday morning in Kuisebmund during a house party at the family home. Namibian Police (Nampol) acting Crime Investigations Coordinator in the Erongo Region Inspector Erastus Iikuyu yesterday confirmed the incident during a routine crime briefing. “According to the information we gathered the suspect was seen with the weapon in his hand, while they were drinking in a room close to the one in which the boy was sleeping,” Iikuyu explained.
He told New Era the suspect allegedly decided to put the gun away in a safe believed to be in the room the child was sleeping. “It is believed that he entered the room in which the boy was sleeping with the intention to lock the gun away in the safe. However, a shot was accidently fired and the boy was hit in the chest. The bullet went straight through him killing him instantly. How he handled the gun and whether it had a safety cap on is still unknown to the police,” he said.
Iikyu also confirmed that the suspect was drunk when the incident occurred. The suspect could allegedly not even recall the shooting the next day, during questioning by the police, but was shocked to learn that he had shot and killed his son. The father is expected to make his first court appearance in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder. In Swakopmund a 28-year-old man was fatally stabbed during a fight in a bar at the town. According to the police at Walvis Bay, the suspect who was identified as Hardly Kanvendje was involved in a fight with 6 men.
During the fight he was stabbed twice and died on the spot. A 31-year-old man was arrested and will make his first appearance in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court today. Meanwhile, two employees of NaTIS at Walvis Bay were denied bail during their first appearance in the Walvis Bay Magistrates Court on a charge of fraud. The two accused, 30-year old David Siyambura Kosenge and 25-year old Jekonia Indongo stand accused of presenting fraudulent documents to register vehicles at NaTIS. It is believed the two apparently used a date stamp that belongs to the Roads Authority (RA) in Windhoek to falsify papers and register imported cars that are suspected to be older than eight years in breach of existing laws. According to Nampol the date stamp was found at Indongo’s house during a police investigation. The two were arrested last week Wednesday after one of their attempts failed and was detected by other NaTIS officials.
Defense lawyer, Lana Fouche, represents the two and had their case postponed to October 03 for further investigation and for formal bail applications. Also, four suspects which include two employees of Namport and a security guard stationed at one of the gates at the harbour appeared in court for stealing a container worth N$120 000. The four suspects also appeared in court last week and had their case postponed to July 03, 2014 for further investigation. They were also denied bail and remain in police custody.
