Fitness for more than physical health

Fitness for more than physical health

Michelle Hiangoro said over time, she discovered a passion for fitness that went beyond just physical health as it became part of her mental and emotional well-being, and then later as a career.

Hiangoro, who is a fitness trainer at a local gym, said she is working towards maintaining overall health, increasing her strength and endurance, and finding balance in life.

“I enjoy my work every single day. I feel I have a purpose on earth, and it’s to motivate and help improve the physique of individuals. Most importantly, to help them make the right choices in life to live a healthier lifestyle,” stated the mother of two.

She admitted that balancing fitness with motherhood is challenging, but it is also incredibly rewarding, which has led her to make fitness a priority by incorporating it into the family routine.

“This means early morning workouts before the children wake up. Fitness is about feeling strong, capable and resilient in all aspects of life. I also want to continue building and helping a strong, healthy community. I love helping. It fills my cup.”

The bubbly and passionate trainer said before having children, she was just a member at the gym, but not really that active.

Her fitness journey intensified after becoming a mother.

“Fitness helped me through my hardships in life by giving me the energy and patience needed to keep up with my children and my daily life routine. I registered the kids at the gym. They also get personal training from me, and they enjoy and cry through the sessions. My fiancé gets them ready for school, and I do the lunch routine with the kids. We find a balance as a team also. I just try to make it fun, and show the importance of fitness in life generally,” she giggled.

Hiangoro added that balancing these roles requires careful planning, time management and a lot of flexibility.

She said she prioritises tasks, and sets realistic goals for each day.

“It’s important to recognise that some days will be more challenging than others, and that’s okay. I also ensure that the support system is in place, whether it’s family or friends. Taking time for self-care is crucial. I schedule my workouts like any other important appointment, making sure I am on time, don’t miss it, and making sure I rest enough,” she detailed.

Hiangoro, who comes from an accounting background, has been dedicated to fitness for over seven years.

“I must say, I have been loving the career switch. I studied accounting, and I fell in love with fitness. I was encouraged by the love of my life. He said you only get one life to live, and you live it with all you get to give,” she said candidly, adding that being a personal trainer has helped her be a better mother to her children and a better partner to her fiancé.
