Football and rugby took the centre-stage when the popular FNB Classic Clashes resumed in Keetmanshoop, Stampriet and Windhoek last weekend.

On Friday, hosts Suiderlig High School defeated cross-town rivals JA Nel Senior Secondary School at Keetmanshoop by 3 goals without a reply.

Two students from JA Nel, Malakia Amutenya was crowned Vigo Hero and Gregory Afrikaner walked away with the prestigious FNB Classic Clashes Man of the Match award.

In the oval ball section, old foes Dr Lemmer High School and MK Gertze Secondary Schools both (from Rehoboth) met on neutral ground in Windhoek with the former emerging victorious with a score-line of 33–22. The match was the main curtain raiser to the Currie Cup clash between the Welwitschias and SWD at the Hage Geingob Stadium.

In Stampriet, the tie between the two rugby giants Elnatan and Windhoek High School (WHS) finished in an exciting 31-all stalemate. According to Vicky Muranda, corporate communications manager of the FNB Group, the match was exciting, as can be attested from the crowd response.

“It was nail-biting rugby, especially when WHS led by 21-0 at the break, but their opponents (Elnatan) clawed their way back into the contest – certainly a real Classic Clash of the Titans.”

Vigo Heroes were Martin Jordan Orlam (MK Gertze) and Gerbus van Wyk (Elnatan), while the FNB Man of the Match awards went to Dennis Orlam (Dr Lemmer) and PW Steenkamp (Elnatan).

Action continues this weekend when Mariental High and PK de Villiers go head to head in Mariental on Saturday.
