Windhoek
The 2016 edition of the FNB Classic Clashes was officially launched in the capital yesterday, with the organisers promising a much bigger and better event that will see football, rugby and netball teams battling for top honours.
At the launch, which was graced by Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Jerry Ekandjo, Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) through their Vigo brand were announced as co-sponsors of this year’s edition – replacing Namib Mills which co-sponsored last year.
The Classic Clashes were first introduced in 2008 and have become one of the most sought-after sporting events among high school learners as they face each other in various ball games in a first class setting that excites players and spectators.
In his speech, Ekandjo touched on the importance of sport development at school level, saying such initiatives that come with huge investments should be commended and fully supported by all Namibians. The minister also pledged to financially assist organisers with the placement of Classics Clashes adverts in various mediums.
FNB Namibia’s CEO Sarel van Zyl said they are proud of how the competition has grown from strength to strength and added that the aim is to create a platform where schools can compete and excel at the highest level.
The theme for this year’s Classic Clashes is again “Game On! Be a Hero. Be There!” and strives to reveal the competitive spirit that will foster relations between schools. The principle behind this strategy is to create a positive spirit on and off the sports field, which will hopefully spill over to the participants’ studies, resulting in well-rounded youngsters who know how to play hard, work hard to achieve their dreams and act as role models in their communities.
