After almost eight months without activities, Athletics Namibia (AN) yesterday announced that it will host three national events before the end of the year, with one of the races taking place this coming weekend.
At yesterday’s press conference in the capital, AN president Erwin Naimhwaka announced that the 4th leg of the Coca Cola Athletics Grand Prix will take place in Windhoek this weekend, while the 5th leg will take place at Oshakati on 7 November 2020.
Naimhwaka said the grand prix series were initially scheduled for March this year but had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The first three editions of the grand prix were held at Rietfontein, Otjiwarongo and Swakopmund.
It was also announced yesterday AN will close off the year with an exciting Senior National Athletics Track and Field Championships, also to be hosted next month in Windhoek. The Senior National Athletics Track and Field Championships takes place between 13-14 November.
Naimhwaka said he was delighted to see AN staging these competitions to wrap up the year, saying the upcoming competitions will help athletes to prepare themselves better for other major upcoming competitions next year.
“We are excited to be back after months of postponing our competitions due the Covid-19 pandemic, but we can finally say that we are going to compete and all our engagements are back. The upcoming three weeks will be packed with competitions and I urge our athletes to use this opportunity to fully prepare themselves as they eye Olympic qualification spots at coming events that are lined up for next year. We want to create opportunities with these competitions and as well as groom local athletes who can compete at bigger stages. So we are calling on all affiliated members and clubs to take part in the coming events,” said Naimhwaka.
