All roads may probably be leading to the National Art Gallery of Namibia today as the gallery introduces an off-duty social gathering. The gallery known for hosting exhibitions wants to create a space for people to come together, enjoy live music and experience the gallery in a friendlier and informal way. Selma Neshiko previews the revolution.

“The idea is very simple: we wanted to open the gallery space for social gatherings beside exhibitions openings. This is why we put together live music –this time it will be DJ Alu- and drinks for people. The event is unique in its kind: we are the first cultural institution in Namibia that organises a live DJ session for a sundowner, while still keeping the gallery open to display exhibitions. We want to revolutionise the perception that the younger crowds have of the gallery as an educational and cultural institution,” says  Alexandra Lasky, the Public Relations Officer.

Lasky adds that there is a misconception that art is an elitist thing, something that belongs behind the walls of certain institutions but arts is a natural outcome of human sensitivity and must be therefore made available for everyone to enjoy and understand.

“Many people are interested in fashion without realising that fashion it’s a form of art itself, a form of creative expression just like painting, sculpting or photography. So we believe that the gap between appreciating one form of art and another will be filled more easily by encouraging people to redefine beyond this labeling,” says Lasky.

Once a month visitors will have the chance to socialise and enjoy live music in the courtyard behind the gallery. An opportunity to have fun but also to learn, the doors will be opened for visitors to tour the exhibitions, and with the help of volunteers all the artworks will be spoken about and discussed. Happy Art Hour is designed for people who want to discover and engage with the gallery in an informal way and strengthen the perception that the gallery is a space that can be also recreational, ideal for people who want to socialize and relax after a day at work. Entrance is free.
