FNB Namibia recently launched the 8th edition of the Classic Clashes at the Wanderers in Windhoek.

The FNB Classic Clashes was initiated by the bank in 2008 and has grown from strength to strength over the past eight years with many senior secondary school learners striving for a place to participate in netball, rugby and soccer.

At the launch, FNB Head of Strategic Marketing and Communications Dixon Norval read the FNB speech on behalf of the Group CEO Sarel Van Zyl and said: “FNB Namibia, in association with Namib Mills, is very proud to bring you this sport programme that has been running for eight years consecutively. The theme for this year’s Classic Clashes is again ‘Game On! Be a Hero. Be there!’ and strives to reveal the competitive spirit that we want to foster between schools.

“It also reminds us that it is not only the men and women on the sports field who are important but the total school fraternity, including fellow learners and even the broader school community.  As a matter of fact, it is the host school’s responsibility to encourage spectators to be there in their numbers.  The principle behind this strategy is that the positive competitive spirit on and off the sports field will spill over to the academics as well, resulting in well-rounded youngsters who know how to play hard and work hard to achieve their dreams and who act as role models for their school community.”

Norval stressed that FNB Namibia had over the years seen how youngsters become aware of their own abilities, acquire new skills, learn to measure themselves against others, function as a team, learn how to deal with winning or losing and to respect one another while of course having great fun.

He added that FNB and Namib Mills continues to support the school community at large and best performing players would once again receive N$250 deposited in their FNB bank account and feature on TV as the Namib Mills Heroes.

He continued: “We’ve got the traditional media channels covered, but what better way to engage the youth by using a Facebook page for the youth to share their achievements and experiences with their peers.  Pupils, players, parents – all Classic Clashes supporters and fans can visit the Facebook page and become part of the Classic Clashes Namibia community before, during and after the games to view profiles and results.  We encourage you to actively become part of this cyber community.”

Norval concluded by saying that the bank would also announce a number of new and exciting additions to the 2015 FNB Classic Clashes at a slightly later stage. “In line with FNB’s corporate value of innovation, we continue to add more exciting elements to these events. In 2013, for instance, we introduced the mouth guards for the rugby players to protect them during a match. Last year each participating school received a copy of the Classic Clashes DVD and new song to prepare their unique performances. Watch this space.”
