The Namibia Golf Federation (NGF) is currently preparing a team to represent Namibia at the upcoming All Africa Challenge Trophy 2024 in Morocco.
The tournament will take place from 21 October to 1 December in Casablanca, Morocco, with about 20 countries expected to battle it out for top honours at this major African competition.
Namibia’s team consists of five members, including three players and two coaches.
Speaking to this publication yesterday, secretary general of NGF Brenda Lens said the upcoming competition is one of the major tournaments on the continent.
She highlighted that the tournament is a significant achievement for Namibian golfers to take part in given its impact on gaining ranking points.
The competition is held every two years.
Namibia was scheduled to host it in 2021, but it was postponed due to Covid-19.
“This is one of those competitions where golfers compete for points to be ranked among the best in the world. The more you compete in major tournaments, the more your points increase, allowing you to participate in prestigious global competitions. It’s our responsibility to provide these platforms for those aiming to compete at the highest level,” she noted.
Regarding preparations, she revealed that the federation recently brought a new national team coach on board.
“Training has started, and we’ve hired a new national team coach, who’s been assisting with the team’s preparations,” she said.
She said they will host a fundraising tournament next month to raise funds for the trip to Morocco.
“The tournament will be open to everyone interested in competing. Registration will be N$2 800 for a team of four,” she added.
“It’s tough playing against Africa’s best teams, but I’m confident our team will do us proud and finish in the top 10, which would be a great achievement,” she said.
