Pro Tennis Academy’s (PTA) head coach Romeo van Wyk was all smiles as more than 20 players flocked to the Windhoek High School (WHS) tennis courts last weekend to participate in the 2nd tourney of the season.
The feedback was so overwhelming that the coach had to split the intermediate category into a women’s and men’s division to be able to fit all matches into the two days of play.
Usually the series is the only one in Namibia where the participants play according to their skill set, rather than age and gender.
The intermediate women saw Delicia Dirkse and Faith Kahuure, the outstanding players of last year’s beginners division having now moved up one class, continuing their rivalry in dramatic fashion.
Little separated the pair throughout the games, though Kahuure just managed to edge past Dirkse to claim 1st place with Melanie D’Alton finishing 3rd.
Christopher Jansen secured his second successive win by taking the first place with the intermediate men. Randel Kavandje held on to second place just like during the first event in February, while Mike Kambonde completed the podium in third.
Last year’s winner Eila Kambonde picked up maximum points after a near perfect display in the midi category.
Battling it out with no less than 9 other aces, she stuck to her game, fending off Arnaud Marais and Samuel Mayinoti, who came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
In the advanced category, Cleet Farmer was in a class of his own once again as the reigning champion cruised past Godwin Husselmann and Dudley Minnie to claim victory.
