RUNDU – Kavango East governor Bonifatius Wakudumo has called on political parties participating in the upcoming Presidential and National Assembly elections to promote peaceful campaigns.
“We must make provision for our elderly, people living with disabilities and all marginalised groups to participate in this democratic exercise without barriers. Voting is a right that must be equally accessible to all,’’ he said during the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN)’s stakeholders meeting on the upcoming elections last week in Rundu.
He said despite having different political parties, people should see this election season as a process that they all need to undertake.
“At the end of the day, remember, we are family members. We are cousins, brothers and sisters. We are in-laws,’’ he said.
He added that the hallmark of a mature democracy is the ability to disagree respectfully and ensure that the electoral process remains free, fair and transparent.
“Let us embrace this opportunity to unite for a common purpose of the success of our elections and the strengthening of our democracy. The Kavango East region must stand out not only in voter turnout but in the integrity, inclusiveness and peaceful conduct of our electoral process,’’ he stated.
He opined that the upcoming elections are a pivotal moment in the national journey – and as Kavango East region, they also have an essential role to play.
“It is critical that we, as leaders and representatives from various sectors of society, work together to foster a conducive environment that encourages all eligible citizens to exercise their right to vote. This requires collaboration, understanding and inclusivity,’’ he said.
“As we engage in today’s discussions, I urge all of us to reflect on how we can better facilitate voter education and awareness across our communities.
“The success of any election depends on an informed electorate, and it is our responsibility to ensure that our people understand the importance of their participation and the voting process,’’ he noted.
While engaging stakeholders, Kavango East regional electoral officer Paulus Sifire said the ECN values every stakeholder’s role in the upcoming elections.
“The commission does recognise the essential role each of you plays in ensuring that our elections are credible and inclusive. The police force will be instrumental in maintaining law and order throughout the process, while political parties will need to engage responsibly, and ensure that their members do the same,” he said.
He added that the media will play a key role in informing and educating the public on the electoral process.
