Two learners at Eheke Secondary School in Oshana Region were admitted to Onandjokwe hospital after they were allegedly wounded by a security guard in a seemingly retaliatory shooting.
The incident occurred on Sunday when a group of six learners reportedly attacked the security guard after he refused them entry to the school.
According to the school principal Stevenson Nakaziko, about 21 learners were suspended for sneaking off the hostel premises through a hole they made in the school fence.
The group went on a drinking spree at a local watering hole.
The learners later returned but the security guard refused them entry and a fight ensued.
“The learners insulted the security guard and brutally beat him. He was admitted to Onandjokwe hospital,” said Nakaziko.
The school principal said the learners were on suspension for three weeks but they always insisted on entering the hostel, even by force.
The two injured learners were hurt in the legs but one is in a critical condition.
Some parents who spoke on condition of anonymity said learners at the school are indisciplined.
The Deputy Education Director in Oshana Region, Immanuel Aipanda, confirmed the incident.
He said that learners were suspended because they sneaked out of the hostel to go drink.
Aipanda said although he was still waiting for a formal report from the school all he knew was that there was a fight between learners and the security guard.
“Apparently the security guard lost his temper and took his issued shotgun to shoot the learners that beat him,” said Aipanda.
The Oshana Regional Commander, Commissioner Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa, confirmed the incident, adding that the guard was provoked.
