Hanse-Himarwa remembered as hardworking, joyful cadre

Hanse-Himarwa remembered as hardworking, joyful cadre

MARIENTAL – Describing her as the diamond of the south and pre-and post-Independence icon, President Nangolo Mbumba, Founding President Sam Nujoma as well as former President Hifikepunye Pohamba acknowledged the role Katrina Hanse-Himarwa played in the history of the Namibian nation, during her funeral in Mariental at the weekend.

In a message read on his behalf at the official memorial service, President Mbumba said the nation was privileged to have known Hanse-Himarwa as a mother, daughter,  sister,  friend, comrade,  teacher,  stern but loving leader and a gift from God to her family and to the Republic of Namibia.

“She was a woman of substance, conviction, honour, faith, humour, warmth and compassion,” Mbumba described the former education minister.

The President said Hanse-Himarwa lived a life that was not just well-lived, but magnificently lived, dedicated to others and devoted to making Namibia a better place. He added: “She was a champion of justice, equity and unity, model patriot and committed cadre.”

Representing the nation during the funeral the President said he once more had to go down the familiar but undesirable path of bidding farewell to another noteworthy and admirable comrade, colleague, friend and sister.

“As we are forced to say goodbye to this diamond of the south, we cling on to the ray of hope, taking solace in the fact that she has lived a fulfilled life defined by tenacity, strength of character, hardwork and dedication,” said Mbumba.

He added that Hanse-Himarwa will be remembered as a pivotal figure to the nation’s quest for independence, and a staunch devotee in the pursuit of national development and accessible education for all Namibians.

“All her accomplishments distinguish her as a pre- and post independence icon, and her name will be etched in the annals of Namibia’s history,” said Mbumba.

He extended the nation’s most sincere condolences to the widower, children, siblings, entire family as well as friends and comrades.

In a message read on his behalf, Pohamba said the loss of the former Hardap governor was a significant blow to the nation.

“She advocated the creation of an independent Namibia, where people can pursue their aspirations, “ the statement read. He also said she made a huge contribution with a lasting impact on the education sector.

“We, as Namibians, lost a hardworking, loving and joyful cadre” said Pohamba.

In his contribution, which was also read on his behalf, Nujoma said the passing of Hanse-Himarwa caused deep sorrow and pain to the bereaved family, Swapo rank and file, and the Namibian nation at large.

“She was a woman fit for all seasons and purposes,” Nujoma said and urged the nation to work together to complete all good initiatives that Hanse-Himarwa could not complete. “Our hearts go out to you through your bereavement and loss, but we should also cherish the good memories she left behind, “ the founding President said in consoling the bereaved family.

Katrina Hanse-Himarwa began her political journey at a youthful age. Between 1981 and 1983, she joined the Swapo Party Youth League in Mariental under the leadership of Isak Swartz.

Hanse-Himarwa remained committed to the struggle, never wavering.

As a passionate educationalist, she performed her duties diligently, and began enhancing her pedigree in the education sector.

On her political journey, she was the first vice chairperson of the Swapo Party Women’s Council in Mariental, and was later elected local authority councillor for the party at Aranos Town Council.

Hanse-Himarwa then became governor of the Hardap region, a position she held until 2015, after which she was appointed Minister of Education, Arts and Culture.
