Hatika recognises volunteers

Recently, the Hatika Adult Education Centre (HAEC) hosted its annual Appreciation Dinner, a heartfelt evening dedicated to the remarkable volunteers who give their time, skills and compassion to support the centre’s adult learners.

Situated in the heart of Goreangab, HAEC was established in 2019, with the aim to offer language courses to adults and art classes to children, with a vision of creating opportunities for lifelong learners.

“Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed a moving video slideshow featuring moments captured during the year. Each image and clip showcased the dedication and joy that Hatika volunteers bring to their roles,” stated Wilfred Mbamba.

Mbamba, who is the founder of the centre aspires to create healthy and fruitful learning spaces that cater to a wide demographic base, focused on lived experiences which will empower adult learners to become independent thinkers and develop the continent.

“Volunteers at Hatika play an essential role in delivering courses that enhance literacy, numeracy and practical skills for adult learners in the Goreangab community. Each volunteer received a certificate of appreciation, a small token of gratitude for their immense contributions,” he added.

Held at the end of each academic year, the event was attended by volunteers, former and current advisory board members, and guests who all gathered to honour those who have become the heartbeat of Hatika’s mission.

Board member Antonia Ashipala introduced the Special Awards to recognise volunteers who went above and beyond, displaying qualities that reflect the centre’s values.

Johanna Kadhikua received the Most Committed Volunteer award for her unwavering dedication and reliability, while Selma Peneyambeko Paulus was awarded the Friendly Face for the warmth and kindness she brings to all.

Prince Mathew earned the Creative Problem-Solver award for his innovative thinking in challenging situations, Mpandeni Petrina Lukas received the Compassionate Heart Award for her empathy and care towards others and Fransina Naris was acknowledged as the Most Dependable Volunteer for always being there when needed.

Gift Liswaniso, a new volunteer, was presented with the Rising Star Award for showing remarkable potential and promise.

“In a milestone for Hatika, the board also launched the Hatika Excellence Fund at this year’s dinner. This initiative aims to provide financial support to academically-committed students who may otherwise be hindered by financial constraints. Dedicated to removing barriers, the fund reflects Hatika’s mission of empowering learners to reach their full potential,” added Ashipala.
