Hockey dreams ignite at mini world cup

The 2025 FNB Insurance Russel Bartlett Field Hockey Mini World Cup brought colour, competition and camaraderie to the Davin Astro at Windhoek High School on the 1 to 2 August. With dozens of energetic U/9, U/11 and U/13 teams donning international colours, the event delivered not only action-packed hockey but also a platform for development and inspiration.

Organised by Shayne Cormack of K5 Sports, the mini World Cup has been a cornerstone of youth hockey in Namibia for 22 years. Originally inspired by the Olympics and the Hockey World Cup, the tournament was designed as a fun, non-competitive environment for children to develop their skills.

“What’s important is that you attach the skill to emotion,” said Cormack. “If the kids are loving it, they carry on playing the game. That’s what it’s all about.”

Renamed in honour of Cormack’s late father, Russel Bartlett, the tournament has grown into a national highlight, with participation from schools as far as Keetmanshoop and the coast. Despite its popularity, expansion remains limited by infrastructure and logistics, with Cormack noting the lack of adequate facilities and support structures in other regions as a key challenge.

Still, the event continues to evolve. Many of the high school-aged officials at this year’s edition were once players in the same tournament, reflecting a full-circle development ethos. Cormack explained, “These U/13s become your future coaches, umpires and even national players.”

This year’s edition also featured teams from development schools like Sunshine Private School, who continue to return thanks to early support from the organiser. Backed by committed sponsors such as FNB Insurance and supported by over 60 volunteers and officials, the event was a testament to community-driven sports development.

While the festive tournament celebrated youthful passion for hockey, it also highlighted broader issues in the sport, particularly the need for investment in grassroots infrastructure outside Windhoek.
