WINDHOEK
Nine primary schools from Katutura and three from Khomasdal are chief beneficiaries of hockey equipment – courtesy of a handy sponsorship from Omina Supplies.
The equipment that includes hockey sticks will be used during the schools’ participation in the annual Omina Junior Hockey League – catering for the under-12 and under-14 age groups.
In facilitating the handover of equipment to some teachers from the participating schools at a special function in Windhoek yesterday, Walter Haseb, from the National Sports Commission said though the Namibian government contributes a large chunk to the Sports Development Fund, the Commission welcomes such contributions from the corporate world.
“One of the functions enshrined in the Namibian Sports Act, section 3 (1) (e) is to ensure that opportunities are made available to all persons throughout Namibia and the Hockey Union in partnership with Omina Supplies are certainly heeding that call.”
Haseb further called on teachers and hockey players to guard against vandalism of the donated equipment and to utilize it to the maximum.
Omina Supplies has been sponsoring junior hockey for the past three years with the primary aim of developing the game of hockey in previously disadvantaged communities.
Some of the country’s leading hockey players such as Magreth Mengo, Siyabonga Martins and Joseph Kashamako are amongst a number of players who benefited greatly from these junior leagues.
Local hockey coach and league co-ordinator, Erwin Handura, also expressed his gratitude towards Air Namibia for their goodwill in providing free carriage of the equipment from Germany to Namibia.
