Namibia Horse-Racing Association (NHRA) president Mannes Hendricks said yesterday that the Okahandja Racing Club is getting ready for a horse racing tournament on 29 June and preparations are in full swing.
The event is expected to attract more than 100 local and international horses.
Speaking to this publication yesterday, Hendricks said entries are currently open, and they are still expecting more horses to be entered.
“We have about 97 entries so far and we are still expecting more horses to be registered ahead of the tournament. This is one of the most exciting events on our calendar and we expect all the top horses to be entered at this upcoming tournament,” he said.
Regarding event details, Hendricks said preparations are at an advanced stage, adding that there should be more horses coming from Botswana. “The venue has been inspected and all is set. Horse owners have their horses ready, and jockeys are diligently preparing for this exciting event.
“We have horses coming from Botswana and South Africa, indicating the calibre of the event. Expect top-notch horse racing, and we anticipate local horses to put on a thrilling show at the racecourse,” he stated.
Earlier this year, three horses which finished at the same time couldn’t be awarded due to the lack of finish-line technology, with NHRA development officer Ewaldt Zuma promising fans and horse owners a much better event this time around.
“We’ve ensured all logistics are in place, including hiring medics for jockey safety and veterinarians for horses’ well-being.”
“Regarding the finish-line technology issue, we’ve assured all horse owners that there will be a solution, like a drone or traditional technology, to prevent repeat incidents like the last one. Accurate results are crucial for the sport’s growth, and we’re committed to avoiding any compromises,” he said.
The prize money for the top category, Open Import 2200m, will be N$12 000. Entry fees are N$50 for horse owners, N$20 for adults, and N$10 for children.
