WINDHOEK – The Icestocksport Association of Namibia will host the 4th edition of the Africa Cup at the DHPS sports ground in Windhoek this weekend.

Icestock, normally played on an ice rink, is the only winter sport in Namibia but local players use a summer surface with good sliding characteristics.

Namibian players square off against Kenya to determine the winner of the 4th edition of the Icestock Africa Cup. In all previous competitions, Namibia emerged victorious in the men’s division and chances of winning the cup again look quite promising.

For the first time the competition will have a ladies section. Both Namibia and Kenya have played against each other on two occasions, during the World Cup 2008 and 2012, with the Namibian ladies team walking away with two wins, one draw and one defeat.

President of the Namibian Icestock Association, Detlef Pfeifer, expressed confidence that both trophies will remain in Namibia. Single bronze medal winner, Jessie Mweshipopya, together with Pfeifer, Armin Komma, Donnovann and Cobus Harmse will represent the  men’s team while the ladies squad consists of Corne Harmse, Hannah Schmidt, Beatrix Callard and Ruth Suermann.

The President of the International Icestock Federation, Manfred Schäfer, from Germany will act as overall manager of the competition. The opening ceremony takes place on Saturday at 09h00, to be followed by the team competition at 09h30h with the single target shooting slated for 15h00 (ladies) and 17h00 (men).
