Namibia’s leading shottist Gaby Ahrens reached another milestone when the movie star lookalike blonde diva claimed the prestigious South African Championship in the Olympic trap discipline.
Ahrens triumphed over Sam Pennells during their gold medal match in Johannesburg last weekend after the fired-up Namibian hit an impressive 13 clay pigeons compared to Pennells’ 10 in the final.
“I’m very happy with this result. After getting my personal best at the World Cup in Cyprus at the beginning of the month, this is another step in the right direction. It shows that the hard work and dedication of the last couple of weeks have finally paid off,” said a delighted Ahrens.
From the opening day, Ahrens dominated the qualification round despite her campaign not getting off smoothly.
Ahrens scored 21 and 19 points during the opening two rounds, to find herself on equal terms with her competitors.
However, a fantastic 24 in the final round gifted the Namibian best overall score of 64 which culminated in first place.
Pennells finished 2nd with 62, leaving Ahrens to set up a date with Leonore Botha in the battle for the final.
The Namibian maximized her momentum outclassing Botha 14:10 before clinching gold at the expense of Pennells.
Ahrens’ ultimate aim for the season is the African Championships in November where the 2010 Commonwealth bronze medallist hopes to walk away with another impressive display to secure her a ticket for the summer Olympics next year in Brazil.
To realize that dream, Ahrens is contemplating to compete in the last World Cup of the year in Azerbaijan in August and the World Champs in Italy, in September later this year.
