Khomas dominates police games

Khomas dominates police games

Khomas region stamped its authority at the 28th Annual Namibian Police Sports Championships held in Otjiwarongo, emerging the overall winners after excelling across several sporting disciplines.

The week-long event, which brought together 1 640 officers from all 14 regions, saw participants competing in athletics, football, volleyball, darts, and other disciplines in the male and female categories. The championship is a key fixture on the police calendar, aimed at fostering unity, teamwork, and camaraderie through sport.

Kunene region impressed in the popular drill competition, taking home gold ahead of Hardap and Oshana, who finished second and third, respectively.

Speaking after the event, Fortune Eichab, a member of the organising committee, hailed the smooth running of the championships, noting that everything went as planned.

“Everything went well. Erongo dominated proceedings at this important event, winning convincingly in football, volleyball and athletics,” he said. “Oshana and Omaheke challenged them in athletics, while Otjozondjupa stood out in darts.”

Eichab also confirmed that the championships served as a valuable scouting ground. “Several players and coaches were identified during the competition. The games presented different opportunities, and I’m proud all the regions came together and worked as one. I believe the upcoming league season will benefit from the talent we’ve unearthed here.”

Jessica Nandova, captain of the Otjozondjupa netball team, hailed her region for their outstanding performance, expressing satisfaction with  both her team’s showing and the level of competition at the event.

“I believe the competition has improved this year. Teams were aggressive and eager to win, the level was high, and that’s a good thing. It forced us, as defending champions, to work even harder and perform better than before. I also want to thank the department for organising these games, as they not only promote fitness and competition but also help us network and connect with colleagues from other regions,” she said. –mkambukwe@nepc.com.na
