Archery tournament a success - Weakley

The organisers of the recent archery tournament, which took place at Wanderers, have hailed it as a success after accommodating approximately 150 archers on the day over the past weekend.

The tournament served as qualifiers for the upcoming African Cup tournament, which will be hosted in Namibia sometime next year and will feature Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Egypt, and hopefully Canada.

In the junior girls’ category, Skyler Vivers took home the gold, followed by Fatima Bwalya in second place, and Juanita van Rensburg came in third place.

In the boys’ junior category, Jason Koch was first, followed by Duan Kruger in second place, while Alejandro Gillmer finished in third position.

In the senior girls’ category, Teresa Kasomba secured the gold medal, followed by Kayla von Wielligh, while Deidere Moster came in third place.

Meanwhile, in the senior boys’ category, Burton Weakley retained his title, followed by Ezra Kharigub, and Tristan Jacob finished third with a bronze medal.

Speaking to this publication after the tournament, Chairman of Archery Namibia, Poenie Weakley, expressed his satisfaction with the number of participants that showed up, highlighting their outstanding performance.

He further added, “I am pleased with what I saw, which clearly shows that competition among archers is intensifying every year. Many archers have proven their potential at this competition. We had numerous talented archers, and the women’s category exhibited significant improvement with tough competition among the participants. We hope this level of competition continues.”

On the way forward, he said that with Namibia hosting the African tournament, work begins now as it is expected to be one of the toughest tests for local archers.

“We are expecting all the top archery shooting countries to come to Namibia for that big competition, and for us, work has to begin now. We have to ensure that all our shooters are in great shape prior to the upcoming tournament next year. We will hold a couple of tournaments just to give them the needed exposure before the big tournament itself,” he added. -mkambukwe@nepc.com.na
