The aunt of a 16-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped by a 46-year-old man at a village in the Oshana region, has allegedly begged her niece not to report the matter, as it would land her husband in prison.

It is alleged that the girl, who is also named after her aunt, was raped three times by the uncle between December last year and January 2022.

According to Oshana police spokesperson Thomas Aiyambo, the matter was only reported last Friday.

“The first incident took place when the suspect’s wife went to the hospital. He forced her to sleep on his bed where she fell asleep,” Aiyambo explained.

Aiyambo said the suspect managed to undress the teenager and raped her.

“She was woken up by his weight and the pain. He was on top of her,” said Aiyambo.

He further said the men chased the girl away to her room after the rape, and threatened her saying that she should not tell anyone.

“Since she was paining and depressed due to the situation, she decided to tell her aunt (the wife), who also warned her not to tell anyone because her husband will end up in jail,” Aiyambo said.

Both the suspect and the victim resided in the same house.

The suspect has since been arrested.

In another incident on Sunday, a three-year-old baby girl died after drowning in a well at Omutaku in Omusati.

According to Omusati police commissioner Titus Shikongo, two minors aged three and four were in the company of three older children aged nine, 11 and 14 when the incident happened.

“It is alleged that the older one took the two minors to a neighbour’s house where they left them unattended while they were swimming at a nearby pit. 

It is further alleged that the two minors also went out of the yard after which the younger one drowned in a well.

The four-year-old who was with him went back home.”

Shikongo said the community members tried to look for her after noticing her absence. 

The deceased’s lifeless body was only discovered by his uncle on Sunday morning, floating in the well.

He is identified as Mikael Kapia Pandeni Job.

Shikongo has cautioned the community not to leave minor children unattended, especially during this season when water pans are full.

The community is also cautioned against allowing children to play in wells or swim in oshanas.

Community members are further advised to desist from crossing the water pans at night and while they are under the influence of alcohol.  vkaapanda@nepc.com.na
