Today, I will share a personal playlist of Namibian music. This is something new that I will do every month. For the last two years, I have been extremely absent from Namibian music. Largely because I was uninspired. Uninspired by Namibian music, or simply life? I don’t know; I think that’s immaterial at this stage. What matters now is that I am officially in a space where I can consume music again. Especially Namibian Music.
Just a disclaimer…this list that I will share monthly is not a New Era newspaper list. It is not sanctioned by the New Era newspaper, or endorsed in any way. This list is not a Fresh FM list. This has nothing to do with playlisting it on radio, or getting your song on the radio. I do not own Fresh FM; Fresh FM has its own management, rules and processes.
This list is in no way related to any other business that I am involved with. I am a Namibian; I am allowed my personal opinion. So, please understand that these songs are songs that are on my personal playlist. These are songs that I play in my personal setting. No agenda whatsoever. Just a pure feel for music.
I will start with Jericho. Jericho dropped two songs towards the end of last year that shook my soul.
The first one is “Chip in, Chip out”. It’s a song that speaks to my love for Hikwa (Hip Hop Kwaito). The second song features his long-time friend Dixon on “Tsau ta ko”. The song speaks about missing your home. As you know…a good majority of us in the capital are not necessarily from the capital. That song speaks to that.
KP Illest and Skrypt dropped a collaborative album not so long ago. There are three songs that have me in a chokehold; Goats, Passion Fruit Lemonade and Small Boy, Big Dreams. All I can say is…it was about damn time these two dropped a collaborative effort.
I’d like to highlight Sunny Boy’s magic next. Sunny Boy had in the last couple of months impressed me to a great degree with his features. He features in Ms. Gideon’s ‘Dream’. A song that I absolutely love.
Then he ushers his daughter, Princess Harmony, into the industry with ‘Tuka Naame’. It’s a song that my daughter and I love. Yeezir also dropped a project last year, and there is one song on that album that is extremely underrated. But it’s fine…I like the underrated ones because then they do not get abused. I can enjoy it in peace without it getting spoiled by KATUTURA! Nxo. Anyways, that song is ‘Company’ featuring Lioness. Kaptein Tswazi has a knack for creating very catchy hooks. He did it with ‘Skippa’, and now he has done it once again with ‘Alala’, song that features Damara Dik Ding, Jericho and Mega. Speaking of catchy hooks…Micheal Pulse featuring Ambishez and Alex Kakende on ‘Munavita’, Adora’s ‘Talk To Me’, and Manda Gabriel’s ‘Keulu’ are all songs that I find myself humming to, even without the songs playing.
