Teamwork secured points for us – Izaacs

UNAM rugby team captain Alcino Izaacs believes their 30-17 win over Wanderers in the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) league at the weekend can be attributed to great team work as well as commitment from the management at the club.

Izaacs attributes their weekend success not only to the stellar performance on the field but also to the unwavering support and commitment from the club’s management. Reflecting on their opening match, Izaacs expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance and emphasised the significance of their collective effort.

“Winning the first match of the season is a great feeling, especially against our big rivals Wanderers. Our victory today is testament to our ability to work together as a team. The support we received from the management during the offseason has truly paid off,” he said.

The victory sets a positive tone for Unam’s season, signalling their intent to build on past successes and maintain their competitive edge. In a league known for its fierce competition, every win is hard-earned, and Unam’s cohesive teamwork proved the deciding factor in securing maximum points.

Elsewhere in the league, other teams also showcased their prowess on the field. Newly promoted side Dolphins Rugby Club succumbed to a tough 50-10 loss against Rehoboth Rugby Club, while Kudus also registered their first win of the season winning 40-32 against Reho Falcon while Grootfontein secured an impressive 28-26 victory against United in thrilling matches.

In the women’s division, Unam’s dominance was on full display as they convincingly defeated Wanderers 50-5.

Captain Lydiana Nanamus highlighted the team’s determination to retain their title. “We are the defending champions, so winning was expected of us. As champions, we need to demonstrate that our past victories were the result of our hard work.

This season will be no different; we will continue to work hard as a team and strive to retain the title.

I believe today’s win is attributed to us playing as a team fighting for the same goal,” she added.

In other results in the women’s league, Rehoboth got the better of Oceans 17-5 at home while United thrashed Grootfontein 65-5 at home.
