Independence bonanza to thrill the north

Founder and promoter of MTC Kilimanjaro Boxing Club, Joseph Bernhard, has confirmed that the stable will host a boxing bonanza in celebration of Namibia’s Independence.

Initially scheduled for earlier this month, the event was postponed following the passing of Namibia’s Founding President Sam Nujoma. The highly-anticipated tournament will now take place on 29 March at Oshakati’s Independence Stadium in the Oshana region.

The event will feature an amateur boxing tournament, with over 40 boxers competing for top honours across various weight categories. Boxing clubs from surrounding areas, including those from as far as Kavango West, are expected to participate.

Speaking from his home base in Oshakati, Bernhard expressed his excitement after the sponsors had agreed to stage the event this month. “After long discussions with our sponsors over the past few days, I can now confirm that the event, originally planned before the Independence celebrations, will take place at the end of this month at Oshakati’s Independence Stadium,” he said.

Bernhard, a former boxer himself, emphasised that his fighters are well-prepared, despite recent disruptions in the sports calendar. “For boxers, staying out of the gym is like a taboo. Even when events were postponed or called off, we made sure our fighters trained at least twice a day to stay in shape,” he added.

Beyond competition, Bernhard highlighted the significance of the bonanza in developing young talent and steering them toward successful careers in boxing. “Our goal has always been to uplift young boys and aspiring boxers, helping them realise their full potential. This event is not just about boxing; it’s about keeping the youth on the right path. We have fighters who have already represented Namibia internationally, and we want to continue nurturing future champions,” he said.

Amon Iiyambo, coach and trainer at Teremoto Boxing Club, one of the stable sets to compete in the event, praised MTC Kilimanjaro Boxing Club for its continued efforts in providing a platform for young boxers.  “This is a huge event for boxers in the north, especially amateurs. Kudos to MTC Kilimanjaro for consistently organising such events that keep our young fighters focused and motivated,” he said.

On his club’s preparations, Iiyambo expressed confidence in his fighters. “We are ready. Over the past few years, we have made a strong statement in the regional and national boxing scene. Our boxers have spent countless hours in the gym, and now we just have to wait for action time,” he added.
