Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) leader Panduleni Itula announced on Sunday that they will be challenging the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly election results in the electoral court.
Speaking at a press conference alongside other opposition party leaders, Itula said the application will be brought on an urgent basis.
“We are making sure to seek a remedy within the principle of the rule of law from our court. It’s not about any political party or any individual, it is a principle, and fundamentally about the perseverance of our democracy as a nation. We are thus calling on all members of the Republic to stand behind all these political parties to seek a remedy. We know you are all angry, especially the youth. The adrenaline is pumping, but remain calm,” he said.
The group’s chairperson, McHenry Venaani, who is the president of the Popular Democratic Movement, said: “We shall no longer sit quiet and tolerate this.”
Henk Mudge, the leader of the Republican Party, on his part said although elections have been contested before, this particular challenge is historic, in that opposition parties are united in the fight.
“This time around, we are united, which I think is extremely important. This challenge is probably one of the most important projects ever done in this country. We cannot allow what happened in this election to happen again,” he stressed.
Rally for Democracy and Progress secretary general, Cecil Nguvauva said his party decided to join the fight, as they want to fight for every Namibian, and preserve the democratic process.
“We are fully in support of the case spearheaded by the IPC,” he said.
Other parties rallying behind the IPC include the Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) and the National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo).
