Iyambo expands into new business opportunities

At 25 years old, Abraham Iyambo is building a future in agriculture while also exploring opportunities in the oil, gas and fishing industries.

Iyambo, who runs a commercial farm, says his passion for farming started after years of encouragement from his father. What began as a childhood activity during school holidays has now become a growing business focused on cattle, goats and sheep.

“My dad always used to tell me about farming. He would say, ‘my son, you need to go to the farm, farming is good’. But it was not really my interest at first,” he said.

He added that his love for farming developed at the age of 17 after learning more about livestock and animal care.

“I started loving farming at the age of 17, and ever since then I have developed a passion for cattle, goats and sheep. Knowing how to treat a sick animal and bring it back to health fulfils me,” he said.

Iyambo said operating a commercial farm in Namibia is challenging because of strong competition in the livestock sector.

“I run a commercial farm, and it is not easy. There is a lot of competition, especially in the cattle business. Many suppliers already have established relationships with buyers, so entering the market is challenging,” he explained.

According to Iyambo, cattle sales at auctions remain the farm’s main source of income, with business usually improving during the winter season. To increase revenue, he has diversified his operations by supplying firewood around Windhoek and occasionally exporting products to Durban.

Beyond agriculture, Iyambo has also shown interest in Namibia’s growing oil and gas sector as well as the fishing industry. He believes these sectors create opportunities for young entrepreneurs to connect with international investors and businesses.

“What I appreciate about both industries is the opportunity to interact with international players, especially from Europe. It exposes you to how business is done globally,” he said.

He added that these experiences are helping him better understand international markets and broaden his business knowledge.
