January 31 was Robbie’s Birthday

Home Archived January 31 was Robbie’s Birthday

When the birthday cake was brought to the party table last night and the happy birthday song was sung by teammates of Ramblers Soccer Club, tears ran down the face of 40-year old Robbie Savage. Though the words were not fully understood by the birthday boy, he was still filled with love and wanted to jump because of his happiness. “I am old now”, he said with a shy smile. Then came the song, “For he’s a jolly good fellow” and the tears flowed once more. Soccer is his greatest passion. His favourite club is Ramblers, although he was a hard-core supporter of African Stars, Tigers and One One’s (Young Ones) in the 1980s. The National Soccer Team, Brave Warriors, is now his pride and Robbie always takes the lead in cheering at the stadium. If the team loses, he cries, and it may take days to accept his disappointment. But he always returns with a smile. The track at the Independence Stadium is nothing for Robbie to walk or to run a couple of rounds, at the same time proudly putting the national flag around his neck – doing what he does best. He’s the holder of many medals as Best Supporter and has raked in a few other medals, including gold, with his team Ramblers as MTC Cup winners 2005. ‘Soccer Mascot’, as they call him, Robbie has also travelled with the Brave Warriors to various African countries. He attended the African Nations Cup in Burkina Faso in 1998. Here Robbie Savage can be seen receiving a gift from Manfred Knab of Dusseldorf in Germany who is presently holidaying in Namibia.
